Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain. The code won’t show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you’re experiencing issues with this component, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I’m assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car can start when the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is connected however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.

I’m not sure what to do, but i believe that i’ve eliminated everything else. I’m worried that i might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them — put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector’s side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector’s end). They must be infinite ohms.

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, for example. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you are experiencing issues with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shutdown.

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, or an unfire when in the gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and needs replacing. The good news is that they are quite affordable and easy to find, especially when you’re looking at the Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, GM’s version of this part is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind a slew of issues with your car. It’s a vital component of the audi keyless go‘s transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how the car’s crankshaft is turning. If this sensor fails, it can disrupt the performance of the transmission and the rest of the car key cover audi‘s components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU uses this signal to regulate fuel and boost, and also to timigrate. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms in these areas. This is a common feature across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 Du, so you might find them in wrecking yards.
